Case Study: Victoria Park Tunnel Alliance

The 340 million dollar Victoria Park Tunnel (VPT) in central Auckland is designed to address the last major bottleneck on the central motorway between the Auckland Harbour Bridge and Newmarket. It involves the construction of a 450m cut and cover tunnel adjacent to the existing viaduct in Victoria Park and motorway widening through St Mary's Bay.

  • Air Matters was engaged by VPT to conduct air testing during the excavation and construction phases of the tunnel development.

  • Emergency response air testing carried out for polyaromatic hydrocarbons, BTEX, VOCs, phenols and cresols and hydrogen cyanide during the excavation of contaminated land.

  • Personal exposure monitoring was carried out for dust and silica.

  • Routine monthly monitoring and reporting of gas levels including hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen sulphide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and VOCs undertaken.

  • Training was given on the use of gas monitoring equipment and Air Matters presented workshops at one of the key site health and safety training days.
