Case Study: Sims Pacific Metals

Sims Pacific Metals (SPM), a major scrap metal recycler, has various sites throughout New Zealand. The Auckland yard processes in excess of 200,000 tonnes per year.

Air Matters was engaged by SPM to complete a resource consent application including an assessment of environmental effects (AEE) for discharges to air for the Auckland ferrous yard.

As a part of the assessment, Air Matters undertook the following:

  • Coordinated an ambient monitoring programme for TSP, PM10 and metals

  • Assessed site emissions against national and international standards for dust, metals, VOCs, PCBs and dioxins

  • Reviewed site operations against best practice

  • Carried out consultation with affected parties

  • Represented SPM as expert witness in a public hearing

  • Resource consent was issued for SPM operations for a period of 15 years
